Your Orthodontic Treatment Is Over…Now What?
The day the braces come off is an amazing day for any orthodontic patient, but don’t get ahead of yourself, because now that you have the smile you’ve always wanted, you have to keep it. That means wearing your retainers as instructed by Dr. Aruri. The reason we need retainers in order to keep our teeth in their post-braces position is that it takes time for our teeth, gums, and jaw bones to get used to this new arrangement. So don’t slack off on wearing your retainers!
Removable Retainers
Retainers come in a few different varieties. Removable ones, whether wire and acrylic or clear plastic, have the obvious advantage that you can take them out, which makes it much easier to clean both the retainers and your teeth. However, that also means you might forget to put them back in — or, worse, lose them after taking them out to eat lunch!
Non-Removable Retainers
Non-removable or bonded retainers are strips of wire cemented to the backs of the teeth to hold them in their post-braces position. These retainers have the advantage of permanently ensuring that your teeth don’t shift back to their old positions, but they can make flossing between those teeth tricky. If you think you’re likely to forget to wear your retainers, bonded might be the perfect choice for you.
Orthodontic Mouthguards at North Haven Dentists
Protect Your Teeth, Mouth And Braces. We’ve found that almost 40 percent of all dental injuries are sports related? If you wear braces, contact sports don’t only put your teeth at risk, metal in an athlete’s mouth can introduce a host of new risks as well.
How North Haven Dentists Helps: Customized Mouthguards Protect You And Your Investment
Most contact sports require athletes to wear mouthguards. Properly fitted mouthguards help protect both an athlete’s teeth and the other athletes on the field. But once we fit your braces, your mouthguard may not fit properly. An ill-fitting mouthguard is not only uncomfortable, it’s also less effective at protecting you from impact, injury and damage.
Braces are an investment worth protecting. Even if you don’t always wear a mouthguard while playing sports, you’ll want to reconsider while wearing braces. Stray balls and other athletes in contact with your orthodontic equipment can be a painful experience. Not only that, excessive contact can damage brackets and cause delays in orthodontic treatment.
Investing in a mouthguard can make all the difference for you and your family’s oral health. While participating in sports and other activities is fun, Dr. Aruri recommends that you protect your beautiful smile while doing so! Let’s talk about your unique and individual oral safety needs.
